Soon in this space you'll begin to notice exclusive coupons and offers for local businesses, as well as a few other surprises down the road. So follow us on Twitter and Facebook (links are to the left), and check in every day for local scoops as well as business profiles, interviews with bartenders, foodporn, and some history.

Looking forward to having you along for the ride!

Open for Business: Whirly Bird, 256 South 2nd Street

There's been a lot of talk in town of people craving that authentic breakfast burrito (mostly those of you from the west coast). As of December, that place has been found. Whirly Bird, on South 2nd at Havemeyer Street does two things, breakfast burritos and espresso. Music machine Jeff Bailey, from Phosphorescent and Virgin Forest fame, has toured all over the country and in his travels found the one food item that New York doesn't do. He and his partner, Francisco, saw the opportunity and leapt at it.

"We've got top notch espresso drinks and breakfast specials," Francisco said. "Breakfast Special" pays absolutely no justice to what Whirly Bird actually offers. For three dollars, your mornings are about to change forever: scrambled eggs, Oaxaca cheese, homemade salsa, on a crispy corn tortilla with jalapeno potato chips crumbled on top (add $1 for chorizo);this breakfast burrito is as close to authentic as you can get. With a little spicy zing, juicy and tender eggs, and outstanding salsa, this morning grease fest trumps it all. "We're just keeping it really simple. Really good coffee and really good breakfast tacos and that's it," Francisco said. Simple, quaint, and delicious.

In addition to the belly bombing burritos and fresh, hard hitting Oslo espresso, every few weeks Whirly Bird's walls feature a new local record label and their respective artists. This week, you can find Partisan Records artists plastering the white walls. Deertick, The Unfazed, the Uncut Diamond EP, Virgin Forest (naturally) and more, have their vinyls framed and displayed for all to check out.
